Gathering

A quorum was gathered and we came together in God’s name at 7:39pm. A candle was lit to remind us that Christ is present with us as we meet.

Check-In

We shared discoveries associated with our Lenten observances.

Agenda

Appointing a replacement to the council for Airin Cherian, identifying a youth to participate in the synod and setting a council retreat date were added to the agenda. The agenda was accepted with the additions.

Devotions

Mark Olsen led a devotion from The Word for Every Day by Alvin Rogness A Peculiar People. Next month, George Wilson will lead devotions.

Hymn

We sing We all are one in mission (576).

Word

Minutes

The minutes of March were accepted, after adding for a cabin to the $5000 requested by Camp Calumet.

Motion 1. Amend the grant to Camp Calumet to say that the $5000 is for a cabin. moved, seconded, carried.

Financial Reports

Financial secretary’s report

Don Mitchell briefed us on financial reports. The primary point of interest this month is the correction of an error in applying tower funds to n7 and n1 for January and February. The March statements are now correct. Income year to date is ahead of plan and puts the Church in good shape going into the traditionally slower summer months.

Treasurer’s report

Ken Heyda briefed us on the details of the tower fund allocation error that was caught during his quarterly review of bank and treasury reports. Two transfers were made in March to cover costs: from M1 to the intern fund to cover the motion passed at the last council meeting and from n7 to t8 as a partial payment covering the youth service trip in May. A final transfer will be made once the total costs are determined.

Old business

Parish House Maintenance

Funding repairs to the Parish House by the Church and lss was discussed. Funds spent from p8 to cover repairs required beyond the amount available in p12 will be transferred back to p8 when sufficient funds accumulate in p12 through lss rent allocation for Parish House maintenance.

Tower Funds

at&t will not be increasing rent payments due to modifications for new equipment. Their current agreement allows them to make these modifications without a change in rent.

New Business

Motion 2. Motion to designate $5000 from n7 for Camp Calumet Campaign for Today to be made in two equal payments over two years. moved, seconded, carried.

Motion 3. Motion to designate up to $2000 from n7 to support the Midwife Kit (now called New Born Kits). moved, seconded, carried.

Motion 4. Motion to designate $1200 from n7 to fund an individual to attend Counselor Training at Camp Calumet. moved, seconded, carried.

Council discussed options for funding Camp Calumet tuition costs for individuals in need. Council subcommittee will look into designating a specific fund other than n7 for this purpose.

Motion 5. Motion to support a memorial at the elca Synod Assembly this summer regarding anti-bullying legislation. moved, seconded, carried.

Green St. Paul

George Wilson discussed the next months focus for the social committee regarding a project to “Green St. Paul”. This project will increase awareness of the environmental impact of St. Paul and identify ways to minimize that impact. There will be discussions to include cooperation with the Korean congregation and it will be the topic of the May 8 adult forum.

Updates

A leadership retreat for the Church Council and other key leaders of St. Paul will be held on Saturday, June 18. Meetings will start at 9:00am and last until early afternoon.

The council is authorized to appoint a member to fill Airin Cherians remaining term on the Council. The council agreed that a High School Junior would be appropriate. Pastor Goodman and Mark Olsen will discuss participation with the potential candidates and their parents.

Pastoral reports

Vicar Stratton reports the Peace Garden project is proceeding well and that materials are arriving. Recent pastoral care visits have been rewarding. She appreciated the support of the Council and the congregation while she filled in for Pastor Goodman.

Pastor Goodman speaks about some objectives for the retreat: thinking about how we can connect with people outside the Church where God is at work in the world, taking stock of our current health and situation. He thanked Vicar Stratton for the job she did filling in during his absence following his fathers passing.

Meal

Pastor Goodman gathers us in prayer and leads communion at 9:14pm.

Respectfully submitted, Chris Trost
