Background

As a young man, Tempest decided to climb a tower in Arkhosia and attempt to get hit by lightning. His attempt was successful, and after he had recovered this watersoul Genasi discovered he could manifest the stormsoul as well. His adventure did not go unnoticed. Gorsk, a dragonborn wizard at the University of Arkhosia judged that Tempest had the perfect temperament to fill a position in Gorsk's lab.

And so Tempest Thundar left the primordial ghetto of the Genasi and became a Guinea Pig at the University, testing Cursed Items or powerful items that might potentially be cursed. There he learned about the arcane in the least pleasant possible way, but also developed his endurance and a magical skill for shielding himself from harm. When a cursed longsword fused itself to his hand, he took it in stride, taking up swordsmanship (the sword eventually gave up on trying to piss him off and agreed to detach if he'd pass it along, but that's another story). During this time he studied with That Guy and met Selene, who was also studying with That Guy.

One fateful day, however, Gorsk had Tempest try on an ancient Girdle from a civilization that had long since gone extinct. The Girdle was supposedly created to solve whatever problem was afflicting their people, but the descriptions of the problem were ominously vague - hence the need for a Guinea Pig. Tempest remembers that he was actually very optimistic about that Girdle. It wasn't, after all, known to be cursed at all, which made it a fairly desirable assignment as these things went.

Anyway, on went the Girdle, there was a flash of pink smoke, and Tempest felt a bit unsteady, a bit odd... then looked down at herself and her jaw dropped.

"Oh," Gorsk said in a disappointed tone. "Another one of those girdles. I suppose I should have known."

Taking off the girdle didn't have any effect. But Gorsk's attitude was the worst part - that was the last straw. Tempest decided she had had enough of this crummy job and quit on the spot.

She stormed back to the Genasi ghetto and found it changed. It felt somehow unwholesome. Old lady Flutterby, a windsoul, flew up to Tempest.

"Oooh, ye'd best be turning back, young lady!" The breezy crone didn't recognize Tempest anymore. "It's not safe for our kind any longer."

Flutterby told Tempest of a dark cult of demon-worshippers that had corrupted figures of note in the Genasi community. Demons are tainted and insane, but they share an essential primordial nature with Genasi. This cult possessed the ability to corrupt Genasi and literally turn them into demons, for some unknown purpose. Uneasiness filled Tempest - the taint permeated the ghetto. She felt it reach out to her, urging her to a frenzy of bloodshed.

Not even armed, Tempest had no choice but to flee to fight another day. Ever since, she has been chopping her way up the ladder of success. One day she will bring some demon-cultists to justice, unless she herself succumbs to the corruption of the Abyss.
